John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks won the SEC title by defeating the Vanderbilt Commodores 86-75. Darius Acuff Jr. led the team in scoring and assists, dropping a brilliant double-double with 30 points and 11 assists.
Calipari’s team faced its fair share of disappointing stretches but still managed to put up a 26-8 overall record, going 13-5 in the conference. The Razorbacks were dominant at home throughout the season, losing just one game.
The Razorbacks have also been criticized a lot this season, but it has not affected the mentality that Calipari’s team approaches their games with. After winning the SEC title, Calipari had some things to get off his chest.
Calipari stated that one of the most important things for any team is understanding what their identity is. He said that while every player on the team plays for the program’s success, they also play for the name on their jerseys.
“When you’ve done this a long time, and you’re in the business of young people, it is about the name on the back of the jersey. Yes, we’re doing it for Arkansas.. I’ve kind of been that way and done alright at every school I’ve been at. You can say it’s wrong. You can either be P’d off or be peed on,” Calipari said.
This was Calipari’s seventh SEC title win. He won six SEC championships during his legendary run with the Kentucky Wildcats from 2009 to 2024. Calipari also became the first coach to win SEC titles with two different programs.
This was Arkansas’ first SEC title win since 2000. Calipari joined the program in 2024, and he has made massive progress with the team.
John Calipari Questioned the SEC Championship Win
Even though Calipari has won this title seven times since 2010, the Arkansas Razorbacks have only won it twice. Despite what many would consider a monumental victory for the program, Calipari was thinking about the NCAA Tournament soon after celebrating the win.
During his conversation with the reporters, Calipari talked about where his team might be seeded for the NCAA Tournament. He wondered if his players would get enough rest before heading into the tournament.
“Now my guess is, we’ll play Wednesday..Hopefully, they’ll say ‘Let them rest till Friday.’ Not a chance …Let’s see where they seed us..Does this matter? I don’t know,” he said.
The Razorbacks will kickstart their NCAA Tournament first-round campaign against the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors on 19th March.
