John Calipari might be a great coach and a hoops legend when he is on the court. But when he is away from it, he is the husband of Ellen Calipari, who makes sure to call out John for every chore that he misses at home.
As per The Athletic, last year, Ellen posted more than 10 images of trash cans that John did not take out. In a January 22 post on Instagram, she said that a plumber brought the cans back up in the garage. “Chivalry lives, just not in my house,” she wrote in her caption.
Ellen had started getting close attention from college basketball fans who loved watching her poke fun at her husband. During an interview with Alyssa Orange of Whole Hog Sports, Ellen described why she likes bantering about her husband on social media.
” It’s easier for me to be able to, well, obviously make fun of him, because he makes fun of me…” Ellen said, “…in small groups to other people, and no one knows that, and I had no way to retaliate, and now I’m making up for it.”
Over time, she started posting about how John Calipari was beginning to comply. Earlier, it was hard for Ellen to convince John to take out the trash, but it seems like the Razorback head coach has finally come to terms with his duties and chores at home. Shaming John for ignoring his home chores on social media surely worked in favor of Ellen.
Ellen Calipari Calls Her Husband ‘Roommate’ in Most of Her Posts
Though Ellen and John Calipari have been married since 1986, they aren’t just lovebirds. Ellen Calipari loves putting another label that best describes the couple’s relationship. In most of her social media posts, Ellen dubs John as ‘The Roommate.’ One time, after John took the trash out two weeks in a row, Ellen wrote on her Instagram:
“Inquiring minds want to know…look who’s helping take the trash cans down 2 weeks in a row! ? He even knew it was trash day ? Now I’m wondering if he’s up so something! I think he’s just “Swaggy Roommate”! ?”
Coach Cal has tried to save his reputation on Instagram several times. One time, when Calipari was the head coach for Kentucky, Ellen called him out for not doing anything for Valentine’s Day. In response, Coach Cal posted a lengthy message on Instagram. He wrote:
“I know I’m not romantic and truly do nothing in my home, but I did take my wife to a Valentine’s dinner. She also got a very, very thoughtful card with chocolates. The dog got hold of the card though, so it’s very nice, but beat up.”
He added:
“I’m proud of my wife and how she is stepping outside her comfort zone. She is a great mother, wife and roommate! Happy Valentine’s Day, Smellen. (My secret nickname). Who’s funny now?? (And I’m not romantic?? How about that rose?? Spoiling the princess!!)”
Despite the banter on social media, Ellen and John never take each other too seriously on social media. At the end of the day, she simply uses her Instagram to give fans a glimpse into their family life and the Calipari household.
