Apparent Identity of Man Behind ‘Leaked’ Darryn Peterson and Bill Self Clash Revealed

There has been a substantial amount of controversy regarding Kansas University freshman Darryn Peterson’s minutes for the Jayhawks. The projected No. 1 pick, who sat out a significant number of games in the first half of the season, will once again miss Kansas’ February 9 matchup against Arizona. This time, the freshman star is listed out due to flu-like symptoms, making it harder for the No. 9 Jayhawks to go against No. 1 Arizona.

Amid all of this,  narratives of a potential clash between Kansas head coach Bill Self and Peterson have been doing the rounds on the internet. Posted by Barstool Arizona, the post described Peterson’s unavailability as:

“So hes sick and he didn’t tell anyone in practice and Bill said don’t half a** it if your gonna play, if not sit. DP said F**k It, I’m out.”

This points to a lot of questions for the Jayhawks to answer, especially with regard to disciplinary issues within the team. The person who seems to be texting in the group chat might as well look like a member of the Jayhawks. However, Daniel Berk, associate AD for strategic communications at KU Athletics, was quick to offer clarification. Through a tweet on X, he said:

“The person texting in this video is a contracted crew worker who handles official stats during the game for ESPN. He does not work for KU and is not affiliated with the athletic department in any way. He has no inside information and was speculating. We are handling internally.”

Peterson has appeared in only 13 games this season, averaging 20.5 points and 4.2 rebounds on 48.9% shooting. This will mark the 11th game of the season that he will miss after battling a hamstring strain and cramps earlier. Junior guard Jamari McDowell stepped up in Peterson’s place, while senior guard Melvin Council Jr. and sophomore forward Flory Bidunga have also been consistent in filling the gap amid Peterson’s absence.

Bill Self Is Unhappy With Darryn Peterson’s Progress

Darryn Peterson hasn’t quite had the chance to show his potential as the projected top pick for the 2026 NBA Draft. After Kansas’ 71-59 win over Utah on Saturday, Bill Self opined that the freshman could have been a lot better in his role for the team. Peterson was held to a season-low 14 points, and Self said it is coming from a lack of effort. As per On3, he said:

“I thought he was unbelievable against BYU for a half and Texas Tech… got through today. Got through it. But there wasn’t much pop or energy like there needs to be. He’s got to be a lot better. We all do.”

Despite the lackluster effort from Peterson and team, Kansas still managed to pile its seventh straight win. But concerns surround facing a strong Arizona team that remains undefeated in the season.
