Why Did UNC Fans Storm The Court and Can They Face a Penalty? Mad Scenes vs Duke Explained

The home crowd for a recent North Carolina Tar Heels game had the kind of celebration that may entail for their supporting program to reap in the penalty for it. On Saturday, coach Hubert Davis and his 2025-26 Tar Heels squad matched up against their bitter, long-time arch rivals in coach Jon Scheyer’s Duke Blue Devils in the former’s home floor, the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

But, after the heated game that served as another chapter towards the historic rivalry between UNC and Duke, the North Carolina home crowd stormed the court as they thought it was already over. As it turns out, there were still 0.4 seconds left in the game, which is why they had to go back to their seats. After the game was officially over, they hopped right back onto the court and filled up the whole playing floor.

The reasoning as to why the Tar Heels faithful decided to raid the court after the game against Duke was that their team won the rivalry matchup by three points, 71-68. What made the victory even bittersweet was that it came off a game-winning three-point buzzer beater by senior Seth Trimble. The official ruling by the governing body of the NCAA and ACC will now check on the matter if any penalties for the UNC program will be given.

In July of last year, the ACC committee approved a new ruling that will penalize teams whose crowd storms the court or the football field after games.

Jon Scheyer Was Unhappy With The Court-Storming That The UNC Home Crowd Did

In a video by @thefieldof68 on X/Twitter, coach Jon Scheyer was seen during his post-game press conference against the North Carolina Tar Heels. The fourth-year tactician was then asked for his overall thoughts on the game. For Scheyer, however, it was difficult to start off his interviews talking about the game itself when he was visibly upset with the court-storming that occurred after the game in which he was concerned for his side’s safety.

“ For me, it’s hard to talk about the game when I was most concerned just for the safety of our players after the game. Like I don’t wanna make it about that ’cause Carolina, they played a great game to win, and that’s a heartbreaking loss for our team. You know, I got staff members that got punched in the face, my family pushing people away, trying to not get trampled. And, that’s not what this game is about,” Scheyer said.

And, you give them all the credit in the world. It’s not about the game, but obviously that was a scary ending, and that this rivalry is not about that as far as the game itself,” he concluded.
