Hubert Davis’ future as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels is in doubt. Davis, a UNC alum, represented the Tar Heels as a player from 1988 to 1992. He went on to have a decade-long career in the NBA.
When Davis decided to become a coach, he joined his alma mater in 2012 as an assistant. After nearly a decade, he became the head coach of the program in 2021 and has held that position since.
If we look at the overall record at UNC, Davis’ tenure appears to be successful. 125-54 overall run, including 68-30 in the conference, isn’t a bad record. The problem is that Davis hasn’t been able to convert that success into trophies.
The Tar Heels were the NCAA Division I Runner-ups in his first season, and it has gone downhill since. To make matters worse, the Tar Heels’ first-round NCAA Tournament exit was after being upset by VCU this season.
Despite valiant efforts from Henry Veesaar and Seth Trimble, forcing overtime was the best the Tar Heels could do. They ended up losing 78-82 to the VCU Rams, and the loss sparked debates about Davis’ future.
As per CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham has said that the program will evaluate all options moving forward.
“The Tar Heels’ administration, including the Chancellor are evaluating all aspects of the school’s basketball program and will continue to have discussions over the coming days,” Cunningham told Rothstein.
This was UNC’s second straight first-round exit from the NCAA Tournament. While the Tar Heels had a good 24-9 overall run this season, including 12-6 in the conference, and an 18-0 unbeaten run at home, early exits and failure to win trophies could cost Davis his job.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Hubert Davis’ Future
There’s no denying that Davis has no job security as of now. The repeated mistakes are bound to come with consequences, and coaches getting fired over a disappointing season is not uncommon in college basketball.
There’s a lot of pressure on Davis right now, but ESPN’s Pete Thamel believes that he will not lose his job in a heartbeat. If the Tar Heels decide to fire him, they’ll do it with respect.
“I do not expect Davis to be fired outright,” he said. “Any kind of departure would be synchronized, likely between he and the school. Hubert Davis is a legend at North Carolina and will be treated with that type of respect.”
Regardless of how they decide to part ways with Davis, it’s highly likely that he has coached his last game for the University of North Carolina.
