The Purdue Boilermakers’ season was full of ups and downs. After going on a 17-1 run to start the season, the Boilermakers found themselves off track toward the conclusion of the regular season.
They lost four of their last six games before heading into the Big Ten Tournament. The Boilermakers caught second wind in the conference tournament and defeated the Michigan Wolverines 80-72 to claim the title.
With a 27-8 overall record, they made it to the NCAA Tournament, and now they’re in conversations about winning the title. We’re only a few games into the March Madness showdown, but Purdue is emerging as a heavy favorite.
Can they will it all this year? We can break down their strengths and weaknesses and refer to the comments made by experts to conclude.
The Boilermakers are arguably the best offensive team in the country. Based on adjusted efficiency, they stand tall among all their competitors. But they also have a massive drawback to their chances on the defense.
They are ranked 36th in defense. The Boilermakers clearly have a lot of work to do on their defense. Their first NCAA Tournament matchup is against the Queens University of Charlotte Royals. They’re also a good offensive side, but lack control on the defense.
As per ESPN’s Jay Bilas, Purdue has a strong chance of winning March Madness.
“Queens, in its first NCAA tournament appearance, brings six players averaging double-figure scoring — but Purdue, coming off a Big Ten title and a win in its rematch against Michigan in the final, is finally playing like the team we imagined at the start of the year. Braden Smith is the best point guard in the country. Purdue wins,” he said.
Bilas believes that the Boilermakers will easily get past the Queens. He predicts that Purdue will beat Missouri in the second round, Texas in the Sweet 16, and Arizona in the Elite 8. Although he is inclined toward the Wildcats because they are “simply bigger and more talented,” Bilas believes that the Boilermakers’ experience will come to their rescue.
Jon Rothstein Also Believes in the Purdue Boilermakers
Experts and analysts are seeing the potential in Purdue, and it’s not limited to them making a deep run, but it’s about a possible title win. CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein, who considers himself an ardent follower of college basketball, believes the Boilermakers are going to win.
While Rothstein also refers to data and team performances, he said he’s backing Purdue because it’s a “sentimental choice.” He compared Purdue’s run to books and movies with great twists and turns.
At the end of that story, he thinks that the Boilermakers will lift the trophy. Even though it’s difficult to say who will win with absolute certainty, Purdue has a great chance against all their opponents.
