Dusty May Makes His Coaching Plans Clear as he Becomes Top Target for UNC Job

Michigan Wolverines coach Dusty May has become one of the top targets for the University of North Carolina, which fired head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons. Davis suffered back-to-back first-round exits, which prompted his exit from the program.

May discussed the UNC job and how highly he rates his job at Michigan in a conversation with reporter Zach Gelb. May made it known that he likes being in Ann Arbor, suggesting he may not be looking to change.

“I’m incredibly happy at Michigan. We love Ann Arbor,” May said. This place has been great to us. It’s made us feel like home. No, my dream job was probably a really good high school in Southern Indiana.”

May said that even if he had been an assistant on the Wolverines coaching staff, he’d think he hit the lottery.

“I told someone the other day, if you told me that I was going to be the third assistant at University of Michigan at this stage of my career, I probably would have thought that I hit the lottery, but you talk about dream jobs, it probably would have been Bloomington South or Bloomington North,” May said. “Bloomington North is an old buddy of mine from travel ball, and Bloomington South has a legendary coach, Jer Holmes, whose son John Holmes is at Miami of Ohio now. So I don’t want to put any heat on those athletic directors, but those two jobs were probably my two dream jobs.”

Dusty May Reveals Timeline When He Was Ready To Guide Major College Basketball Program

In his conversation with Zach Gelb, Dusty May also recalled when he thought he was prepared to take over a top-tier Division I college basketball program.

“When we had the success we had at Louisiana Tech, I felt like I was prepared, and then I missed on that job and ended up going with Coach White to Florida, and then while being in Florida, I felt like I was as prepared as you could possibly be to be a Division I coach. You’re never fully prepared, just like being a parent, but I do feel like we’d had the requisite success,” May said.

When he was an assistant coach at Florida, May revealed he was interviewed and fortunes turned in his favor as he landed the head coach role at FAU, which he took to the Final Four before arriving in Michigan two years ago.
