After Meleek Thomas failed to find a team in the first round of the NBA draft, there might have been some concern around whether declaring for the draft was the right call at all. However, NBA teams seemed to finally come around to the idea that the former Arkansas man was worth a shot in the second round of the draft, and the Cleveland Cavaliers ended up with the player in the most interesting of ways.
After the Sacramento Kings selected Thomas with the 34th pick, he was traded to the Cavaliers, who get a great deal in the process, especially if you ask John Calipari.
“Let’s gooooo! Congratulations to Meleek and his family! @cavs got a STEAL!,” Calipari wrote on X.
Few would be as proud as Coach Calipari for Thomas to get a team in the NBA, with the former Kentucky coach having watched him develop at Arkansas.
John Calipari Was Excited for Meleek Thomas’ Future
John Calipari has been telling NBA teams that they would regret it if they didn’t show an interest in some of his players. He first hyped up Darius Acuff Jr., who played through injury at Arkansas, and then asked for Thomas to be drafted. With the former freshman impressing his college coach plenty at Arkansas, it remains to be seen what role he plays for the Cavs now that they have committed to giving him an opportunity.
His future now clear, Thomas will get an opportunity to work with the Cavs to figure out how he can help the team in the coming season and bring out the best of his talent. Averaging 15.6 points, 2.5 assists and 3.8 rebounds at Arkansas, there’s plenty to be excited about if you’re a Cleveland Cavaliers fan who is just getting to know Meleek Thomas.
