The North Carolina Tar Heels fired head coach Hubert Davis earlier today. Davis, a UNC alum, joined the program in 2012 as an assistant. He won the NCAA title in 2017 as an assistant coach. In 2021, he became the head coach of the Tar Heels.
Davis has worked with several players during his time with the Tar Heels who have made it to the NBA. Coby White, point guard for the Charlotte Hornets, played for UNC from 2018 to 2019, when Davis was an assistant coach.
White was recently asked about Davis and the program firing him after his five-year run as the head coach. He said that he has a good relationship with Davis, and he wishes him good luck before every NBA season.
“Before every (NBA) season he reaches out to me and tells me ‘good luck,’ So I have the utmost respect for him and I will never say anything bad about coach Davis. You never want to see somebody lose their job,” White said.
Davis’s firing by UNC doesn’t come as a surprise. Since the Tar Heels’ first-round exit from the NCAA Tournament, the program was under pressure to part ways with the head coach. Fans were furious that the team lost to the VCU Rams.
“We appreciate all that Hubert has done for Carolina as a player, assistant coach, head coach, and community leader – he has helped make special memories we will never forget,” Bubba Cunningham said in a statement.
Cunningham said that it wasn’t an easy decision to make because of what Davis means to the program and for everything he has done. However, in the best interest of the team, they had to make this call.
Hubert Davis Released an Emotional Statement
Despite the chatter around his uncertain future in North Carolina, Davis wanted to stay with the program. The former UNC head coach released an emotional statement after he was fired.
“Tonight, I was let go by the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. My desire was to continue to coach here. This opportunity has truly been such a blessing. I thank Jesus literally every day for giving me the opportunity, relationships and experiences with the kids and my staff,” he wrote.
Davis said that he was very proud of what he was able to accomplish with the program. He concluded his statement by saying that he hopes to coach again in the near future.
