Doc Rivers’ Future in College Coaching Addressed by Fans as NBA Run Hits End

On Sunday, after the Milwaukee Bucks’ disappointing season came to an end, head coach Doc Rivers was let go by the franchise. The team finished 32–50 and missed the play-in, let alone the playoffs. Rivers was there for three seasons, recording a poor 97-103 overall record.

In the wake of this firing, Rivers could potentially follow Michael Nalone into college basketball coaching. Malone, who led the Denver Nuggets to an NBA championship a few seasons ago, was announced as the new head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels last week. Rivers could also think about joining a college basketball program.

Regarding the same, fans online shared their reactions.

“Doc Rivers might gotta go coach college basketball for a while,” one fan wrote.

“TBH Doc Rivers would be a great college coach if he’s willing to do a little bit of recruiting,” another fan suggested.

“Doc Rivers should go coach college ball,” one fan commented.

“If only North Carolina waited a week…,” one fan added.

It appears most fans liked the idea of Rivers coaching a college basketball program.

“Now that would be a hire akin to Belichick,” one fan compared.

“And be behind in the portal, no thanks,” one fan remarked.

Could Doc Rivers Jump to College Basketball?

The possibility of Doc Rivers entering the college basketball landscape appears to be slim. His firing seems to have come a little late, as major head coach jobs in college basketball are already filled. North Carolina hired Michael Malone and Boston College gave the job to Luke Murray.

The few remaining vacancies at this stage of the offseason are with smaller Division I programs, which may not excite Rivers enough to consider the switch. Rather, the former Bucks coach would consider waiting for another NBA opportunity to come by.

Even if Rivers were to consider switching to a role in college basketball, he’s got no experience. All his coaching history is associated with the NBA, and he’s got little idea about how things work in the NCAAB.

In college basketball, Rivers will have to do year-round recruiting, keeping in mind the student-athletes’ best interests in terms of NIL deals and transfers. Moreover, the salary won’t be high enough compared to the same job in the NBA.

Therefore, at this stage of his career, Rivers could consider retirement or take up a front-office role or offer his views as an analyst.
