Despite the effort unleashed by Kansas Jayhawks star Darryn Peterson, he and his team still fell short against fellow freshman Brayden Burries and his No. 2 Arizona squad, 84-61, at McKale Memorial Center in Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday.
The @SportsCenter account on X/Twitter uploaded a post that included Burries, Peterson and NBA superstar LeBron James’ son Bryce James, who is a part of the Arizona-based program.
The post then pointed out that Burries tallied a dominating double-double of 20 points on an efficient 6-of-10 overall shooting and 12 rebounds, to go along with five assists and a steal in 31 minutes of action.
Burries’ performance edged out the similarly strong outing that Peterson had for the Jayhawks, as the spitfire scorer churned out 24 points, five rebounds, three assists, one steal and two blocks in around 31 minutes of playing time. This was not enough for Kansas as the Wildcats came out on top by a staggering 23 points in front of a passionate Arizona crowd.
With the end of the 2025-26 regular season nearing, Burries and Co. now improve to an overall record of 27-2 (14-2 Big 12) and maintain their top standing in the 2026 Big 12 conference standings. For Peterson and the Jayhawks, their struggles continue as they fall to an overall record of 21-8 (11-5 Big 12), and are sitting as the No. 4 seed in the conference.
Arizona is also currently ranked as the second-best team in the nation, with the 2026 NCAA tournament approaching, while Kansas is at No. 14 overall.
Darryn Peterson’s Kansas Jayhawks Are 3-3 In Their Last Six Regular Season Games
The inconsistencies and struggles of the 2025-26 Kansas Jayhawks have been evident in their last six regular-season games as they have gone 3-3 in those games. This followed an eight-game winning streak, as coach Bill Self and Co. have struggled to get their winning groove back.
They will have two chances to close out conference play strongly with their two remaining games against the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Kansas State Wildcats.
