Darryn Peterson Not Out of the Woods as Doctors Urged to Give Public Statement on Injury Status

Kansas Jayhawks freshman guard Darryn Peterson is grabbing attention for all the wrong reasons. On one side, BYU Cougars’ AJ Dybantsa is putting up insane stats, but Peterson is spending too much time off the court. Not that he’s doing so intentionally, but his constant absence because of injuries has drawn red flags concerning his projection as the first overall pick in the 2026 NBA draft.

Peterson has now missed over 11 games because of different injuries, including hamstring issues, ankle injury, cramping and illness. The latest reason why he has been out is that he’s carrying flu-like symptoms.

As such, fans and analysts alike want answers.

NBA analyst Seth Greenberg wants to know exactly what Peterson is going through as he voiced for the same during his appearance on SiriusXM NBA Today.

“Here’s what I’d like to see happen,” Greenberg said. “I want to hear a doctor come out and say, here is exactly where he is at physically. Here is the illness or the injury. Here’s how we’re treating it. Here’s what we’re prescribing. Well, here’s what we’re recommending.

“But we don’t hear that. All we hear is that he feels some tightness in his calf, or he’s got the flu, or he’s got this, or he’s got that. Tell me what you’re doing. What’s the prescription to help him get better? Is it just the Theragun? Is it just ice, stretching, or rest? We haven’t heard anything from the medical side. Give us a reason exactly why he’s being held out.”

Darryn Peterson Breaks Silence on Continued Absence

Just a few days ago, Darryn Peterson spoke about his absences hampering his freshman season. He said he would have liked to play every game, but he can’t help with his health.

“Everybody’s got an opinion on it,” Peterson told ESPN. “But basketball is my life. If I could have been out there every game this year, I would have. If you would have asked me last year, what were my goals for this year, I would never mention missing games. So all this stuff kind of just happened, but I’ve got to deal with it.”

Kansas head coach Bill Self has also acknowledged Peterson’s availability issues with the NCAA tournament approaching.

“It’s a concern,” Self told reporters. “I thought we were past it, but obviously we’re not. It’s certainly a concern. You get into the NCAA tournament, you’re playing a team just as good as you, and you need to have all your best players available, so to speak. All it takes is for one day like that to derail not only a game, but a season. It’s concerning, but I do think we’re making progress with it.”

It remains to be seen when the Jayhawks will have Peterson back so that they can do well in the March Madness.
