Kansas Jayhawks prodigal freshman guard Darryn Peterson has been surrounded by a tornado of controversy surrounding his on-court minutes in the NCAA regular season.
While some of his absences this campaign were due to plaguing injuries, it seems like Peterson has been limiting his game time on purpose, something that was evident during his side’s landslide 81-69 victory over Oklahoma State on Wednesday, where he featured for only 18 minutes.
While the dynamite ball handler did live up to his reputation by scoring 23 points during his brief time on court, he asked head coach Bill Self to sub him out, essentially tanking his own game time.
This has prompted former Sacramento Kings and Team USA center DeMarcus “Boogie” Cousins to comment on the entire situation. The former Kentucky Wildcats alma mater went off on Darryn Peterson for his recent behavior, asking the young freshman to take this “bullshit” elsewhere.
Featuring on a recent panel on Run It Back TV, Cousins started off stating how pissed he is with the entire Peterson situation, considering the Jayhawks are in the hunt for a national championship. It looks like Darryn’s limited gametime is surely not helping his team, and Cousins did not hold back while bluntly calling Peterson out on this.
“If I’m his teammate, I’m pissed, especially if we going for a national championship”, Cousins stated.
“If Darryn Peterson is my teammate, I’m absolutely saying something. Either you with us or you not.Like, take that bullsh*t somewhere else”, he further called out Peterson.
Cousins also referenced how during his time with the Wildcats, NBA All-Star John Wall, despite knowing that he was going to be the no. 1 pick in the subsequent draft, approached every game as if it were his last, throwing shade on Peterson’s recent antics of limiting his game time with the draft approaching.
How Many Minutes Has Darryn Peterson Averaged This Season?
In the 15 games featured for Kansas, Peterson has averaged a total of 20.0 points per game while only featuring for an average of 26.866 minutes.
While it is difficult to pinpoint the exact reason behind Peterson’s limited game time, it perhaps could be attributed to the fact that the freshman knows that there is a very good possibility that he will be a lottery pick come next draft. Overexposure, mitigating injuries, and managing workload could also be other possible reasons.
While Peterson’s draft stock could very well be going up, his recent behavior is sure not helping his reputation stock.
