UConn Huskies coach Dan Hurley recently told a hilarious story about what he got his wife, Andrea, for her birthday following what he describes as a devastating loss. Before the bright lights at Storrs, Connecticut, and the national tournament, Hurley coached the Wagner Seahawks. The tenured tactician spent two seasons overall with the Seahawks from 2010 to 2012, then found his way at UConn in 2018 after a stint at Rhode Island.
In a recent interview on the Field of 68, Dan Hurley reflected on his time at Wagner. During the interview, he reminisced about the time when he had forgotten his wife Andrea’s birthday right after a loss with his Wagner team on a buzzer-beater. Luckily for him, he passed by a Walmart branch that was still open. He managed to get her a New York Yankees candle and a George Foreman grill, that he says caused her to tear up.
“ Lose at the buzzer, year two at Wagner. And we have a great team, 25-win team, and it was a devastating loss. I realized on the way home that it’s my wife’s birthday, and I don’t have anything. But the good news is that I’m driving past a Walmart that is a 24-hour Walmart. So I run in there. I got what they had left of the cards. I got her like a cinnamon Yankee candle and a George Foreman grill,” Hurley said.
“And when I handed it to, when I handed all her bounty over to her, I mean, the tears immediately started… This guy looks like he’s heading back to St. Benedict’s, and he just gave me a grill that I could just grill chicken or patties,” he continued.
Dan and Andrea Hurley have been married for about 29 years now since they had their wedding back in 1997. They have two sons, Danny and Andrew, with the latter being a part of the Huskies’ 2023 and 2024 national championship runs. Dan Hurley now looks to bring back another national title to UConn in 2027 after his team’s recent loss in the 2026 NCAA Final Four.
Dan Hurley believes that he previously learned how marriage works from his father and brother
Later on Dan Hurley’s interview with the Field of 68 crew, both of the hosts, Rob Dauster and Jeff Goodman, poked fun at Hurley’s aforementioned story. They then gave their own perspective on marriage as a whole, and that Hurley has come a long way now since his years coaching the Wagner Seahawks. Hurley then mentions his father, Bob Hurley, and his brother, Bobby, as where he gained perspective from on marriage.
“Yeah, that wasn’t the…What did I say? That wasn’t the calculus I was doing at the time. It was more lack of perspective passed down from Bob Sr., and the Hurley clan with Bob Jr. Lack of perspective,” Hurley shared. (1:39)
