UConn Huskies coach Dan Hurley continues to love to play the villain role, as evidenced by his most recent interview, where he welcomed all the heckles he was receiving.
On Saturday, Coach Hurley and his Huskies team beat Brad Underwood’s Illinois Fighting Illini 71-62 in the NCAA Final Four of the national tournament in neutral territory, the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
In a video uploaded by @CBSSportsCBB on X/Twitter, courtside reporter Tracy Wolfson interviewed Hurley and asked him about UConn freshman Braylon Mullins. Hurley started talking, but as he was getting his point across, several spectators jeered and booed him. Hurley was surprised and even wondered why it was happening.
“ I mean, the start to the game and then the finish to the game… I don’t know what? Are they booing? The headbutt, I don’t know what they’re booing,” Hurley said before getting back to his point about Mullins. “But, he’s amazing and, you know, he got us here, and then he got us off to a great start, and then the three closed it.”
Fortunately for Hurley and the Huskies, they booked their third national championship game in the last four years, as they beat the Fighting Illini by nine points, 71-62. This means the Connecticut-based program can win its third NCAA title in the last four seasons, as it did in 2023 and 2024 under Hurley. They will face the victor of the Michigan Wolverines-Arizona Wildcats game.
Dan Hurley Shouts Out Past And Present UConn Huskies Coaches In His Post-Game Interview
Also in his courtside post-game interview with Tracy Wolfson, Dan Hurley gave a shoutout to UConn Huskies women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma and former Huskies men’s hoops coaches Jim Calhoun and Kevin Ollie.
This is because Wolfson asked Hurley what his team’s third national title game berth in four years says about the UConn program.
“Yeah, just, you know, you’re set up for success at UConn. You know, you, Geno Auriemma, Jim Calhoun, Kevin Ollie, just some incredible coaches before me. Got the best staff in the country. Got an incredible group of players. And there’s nothing like the bus ride on Monday night over to the stadium when you’re one of the last two teams standing,” Hurley shared. (0:31)
