Mark Pope took over the head coaching duties at his alma mater in 2024. Before leaving the BYU Cougars, Pope took his former team to the NCAA Division I Round of 64 in the 2023-24 season.
The Kentucky Wildcats had higher expectations for him. In his first season, he took the team to the Sweet 16, finishing the season 24-12 overall and 10-8 in the conference. While the result wasn’t what the Wildcats had hoped for, Pope showed potential in his first season.
This was supposed to be his season, one where he would take his team to the ultimate glory. Pope not only fell short of the target, but he also had a worse record compared to last season. The Wildcats finished 22-14 overall.
This time, Kentucky only made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament before being knocked out by the Iowa State Cyclones in a 63-82 loss. Pope is now on hot seat, and he could potentially lose his job.
If the Wildcats decide to part ways with Pope, there are several options that they might consider. Replacing him, however, wouldn’t be an easy task. Pope’s buyout is estimated to be around $13 million.
In addition to that, finding a suitable replacement from the coaches available on the market would be another obstacle. But there are other options too. Although some of them might not be available as of now, we have seen what lucrative offers can do in college sports.
Top 5 Coaches to Replace Mark Pope at Kentucky
TJ Otzelberger
TJ Otzelberger joined the Iowa State Cyclones in 2021 and has taken his team to three Sweet 16 appearances. Known for building strong defensive teams, Otzelberger could help take the Wildcats to another level. If he makes a deep run with Iowa State this season, getting him to switch teams wouldn’t be easy.
Dusty May
Dusty May has taken the Michigan Wolverines back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances. In his second season, the Wolverines had a 19-1 run in the conference and 33-3 overall. May has now proved himself with multiple programs, and if he thinks that Kentucky could be his next challenge, then the Wildcats are the ones getting lucky with that deal.
Scott Drew
Scott Drew has been with the Baylor Bears since 2003. With an NCAA Division I tournament win in 2021 and three Big 12 Coach of the Year awards, Drew has an impressive resume. Although he’s well settled in Baylor, there’s a possibility that he might look for a new challenge.
Mark Byington
Mark Byington joined the Vanderbilt Commodores in 2024. In his first season, Vanderbilt was knocked out of the first round, and in his second season, they lost to the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the second round.
While the recent results don’t paint a good picture, Byington is known for developing young talent into world-class players. If the Wildcats go with him for the next season, he might help bring a title to Kentucky.
Nate Oats
The Alabama Crimson Tide are playing the Texas Tech Red Raiders in the second round of the NCAA Tournament today. This is Nate Oats’ seventh season with the program, and he has taken them to the Sweet 16, Elite Eight, and Final Four so far.
Oats is 51 years old with a proven track record. He could be a long-term prospect for the Wildcats.
