The Cincinnati Bearcats got a major boost with five-star prospect Kam Mercer announcing his commitment to the program on Thursday.
Mercer is a Cincinnati native and standout at Princeton High School. He announced his decision live on SportsCenter. The elite guard also mentioned that he will reclassify from the 2028 recruiting class to the 2027 class.
The commitment is a huge milestone for Cincinnati coach Jerrod Calhoun, who took over the program earlier this spring and immediately made Mercer a top priority.
Mercer is ranked No. 7 in ESPN’s SC Next 25 for the Class of 2028, and he will remain among the top players nationally even after moving into the 2027 cycle.
He is Cincinnati’s highest-rated recruit and its first five-star commit since Lance Stephenson in 2009.
For Mercer, the decision came down to relationships and the opportunity to represent his hometown.
“They made me a priority, and once I made my visit, I felt very comfortable there,” Mercer told ESPN. “Growing up in Cincinnati, it means a lot to me to play here.”
According to Mercer, Calhoun’s track record and personal approach played a major role in the decision.
The new Bearcats coach quickly established a connection with Mercer after arriving in Cincinnati. During the visit, the two reportedly spent time breaking down film and discussing how Mercer’s game would fit into Cincinnati’s offensive system.
“Coach Calhoun knows what success looks like at Cincinnati,” Mercer said. “He’s been successful everywhere he’s been as a head coach.”

Mercer is a versatile player who gives Jerrod Calhoun a chance to build a solid roster and make a deep run in March Madness.
He earned a gold medal with USA Basketball at the 2025 FIBA U16 AmeriCup.
For Cincinnati, his commitment means an opportunity to add more elite talent. It signals that the program is heading in the right direction.
The Bearcats wanted someone to be the face of the program, and with a foundational player like Mercer on board, the future looks very promising.
