Will Wade is facing the heat from multiple people within the college basketball world. He has returned to LSU for his second stint with the team. Firstly, he faced doubts and questions over his return. And now, his unusual strategy is the reason of hate towards him. Many believe that his LSU is now the most orthodox roster in the history of college basketball.
Many analysts had posted on X and expressed their views against Will Wade’s LSU. There is even a top 20 coach, whose name isn’t released yet, who has spoken out against Wade. Recently, Jeff Goodman ranted about Wade’s LSU roster. He said that Will Wade “s*cks for college basketball”.
In the same podcast episode, Jeff Goodman and Rob Dauster hosted Florida head coach Todd Golden. They asked him to present his views on Will Wade’s approach. Goodman admitted that he “lost his sh*” while talking about Wade. Golden then chimed in with his views.
“Yeah, you know, I think if nothing else, we should be able to get a little more direction. Now that guys like this are being brought to the forefront. You know, there it grows, right? It started with guys that were of age, maybe played in a youth club, uh, and then came over. I mean, Urban Clopjar is a great example of that. He was a guy that we brought over that actually lost a year of eligibility, but was, you know, proper age, had done high school and and was a really good student, all those things,” Golden said.
“But now you know when you’re bringing in 25, 26 year olds that have played first of all been drafted and then played professionally for an extended period of time uh that that that’s not what college athletics is supposed to be. And I know a lot of it has changed u you know and then the financial piece is important and influential as ever and the players are now getting a significant piece of the pie which which they rightfully deserve.”
“But this is not again what college basketball is supposed to be. This is not what it’s about. But I do believe this will be a net positive because we’re going to have to see some action. We’re going to have to see if guys like this are going to get cleared or not. And uh, you know, I don’t think they have a great chance to, but you never know. And maybe Will knows more than both of us do. Um, but but we’re going to find out. We have SEC meetings next week, so I’m really excited for that as well,” Golden said.
Todd Golden tries to offer a solution to NIL problems
Golden pinpointed that the biggest issue is that the student athletes are getting paid in revenue sports. Although, that makes sense since they make money for institutions yet the programs are facing problems because the revenue usage isn’t being managed well.
“I think it’s going to be really really difficult to find a solution. Um and for me, I don’t want to see those sports break off. I don’t think that’s what college athletics was built on. But the reality is that men’s and men’s women’s basketball, college football are just simply revenue sports and the other ones aren’t. And so I do think we need to be treated a little differently. And once we’re able to do that, I think we can start working towards some type of solution. But until that, we’re trying to solve too many problems at once and I don’t think there’s enough money to go around,” he added.
