Hubert Davis’ future in North Carolina is uncertain at the moment. Davis is a UNC alum and represented the program from 1988 to 1992. Nearly a decade after retirement from the NBA, he went to his alma mater to start his coaching career.
After a long run as an assistant in North Carolina, he was made the head coach of the program in 2021. Although he is still very respected at UNC, Davis’ run as their head coach hasn’t lived up to expectations.
The final nail in the coffin seems to be the first-round loss in the NCAA Tournament against the VCU Rams. This was their second consecutive first-round exit, and it is now putting a lot of pressure on the university to make a change.
“Every year at the end of the season, it’s important to evaluate all facets of the program and look for ways to improve. The Chancellor, Steve, and I are doing that together now and will continue to have discussions over the coming days,” North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham said, as per Jeff Goodman.
Responding to the post by Goodman, Bruce Pearl heaped praise on Davis. While he admitted that back-to-back first-round exits are tough to overlook, Pearl hopes that the program will find a way to support Davis and his staff.
“Huge RESPECT for Hubert Davis! UNC is one of the top 5 jobs in the country and back to back first round exits won’t cut it. Coach Davis would be the first to admit it. Hope the UNC family finds a way to support Hubert and his staff! Stay tuned!” he wrote.
UNC fans have also started demanding that the program part ways with the head coach.
Pete Thamel Shared His Thought on the Hubert Davis Situation
It’s not uncommon to see coaches get fired by programs, especially after disappointing seasons. However, Davis’ case is slightly different as he has had a longstanding relationship with the program through his playing years and having coached the team for over a decade.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel believes that the program will part ways with him, but they won’t just fire him, as they still have a lot of respect for Davis.
“I do not expect Davis to be fired outright,” he said. “Any kind of departure would be synchronized, likely between he and the school. Hubert Davis is a legend at North Carolina and will be treated with that type of respect.”
The loss against the VCU Rams was likely Davis’s last game with the Tar Heels. We will have to wait for the official confirmation or to find out what the university decides.
