Bruce Pearl Comments on Hubert Davis’ Firing as Possible Next Job for Ex-UNC HC Emerges

Hubert Davis is leaving Chapel Hill after North Carolina fired the head coach following their first-round exit in the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year as the team collapsed against VCU despite leading by 19 points, ultimately losing the game 82-78 in overtime.

Despite Davis possessing a strong overall record (125-54), early March exits are often unacceptable for a blue-blood program like UNC. Davis didn’t live up to expectations and was therefore send packing.

After five seasons as head coach, Davis announced his exit from Chapel Hill through his latest post on social media. He wrote:

“Tonight, I was let go by the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill. My desire was to continue coach here. This opportunity has truly been such a blessing. I thank Jesus literally every day for giving me the opportunity, relationships and experiences with the kids and my staff. I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish together. My goal is to coach again in the very near future.”

Replying to the post, ESPN insider Bruce Pearl hailed the head coach:

“Very good coach, better man and our game is better with him.”

Pearl could also entice Davis to return behind the mic.

Possible Job Option for Hubert Davis After Being Fired

Hubert Davis always has an option to return to broadcasting, something he has experienced before becoming full time head coach.

After retiring from the NBA in 2004, Davis joined ESPN as a college basketball analyst during the 2007-08 season. He worked primarily as a studio analyst, breaking down college basketball games and teams. Davis was also a panelist on “College GameDay,” a flagship show of ESPN.

Davis left ESPN after the 2011-12 season to return to the University of North Carolina as an assistant coach. His stint lasted roughly four/five years, building a reputation for the profile.

Though in his remarks, Davis has commented that he wants to continue coaching, should an opportunity doesn’t arise, expect him to work behind the mic, just like Bill Belichick, who, after being fired by the New England Patriots, took such role for one year before the Tar Heels opportunity came by.
