What is Hubert Davis’ Buyout? Here’s How Much UNC Owe Him After Sacking

The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball program has decided to part ways with head coach Hubert Davis. Analyst Jeff Goodman from “The Field of 68” reported this on X. So, what does his buyout look like?

Former UNC coach Roy Williams hired Davis as an assistant in 2012. After Williams’ retirement, the latter was named the 19th head coach of the program in 2021. According to USA Today Network, Davis signed a six-year deal with the team.

After an extension in 2025, the Tar Heels had him under contract through 2030. However, with their decision to move on from Davis prematurely, they now face a steep buyout. UNC owes him approximately $5.13 million now that they have fired him before April 1. With four years remaining on his contract, UNC has confirmed that it will honor the terms of his buyout.

Hubert Davis just finished his fifth season with the program. They managed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. However, the Tar Heels suffered an upset 82-78 loss to the VCU Rams in the first round. This disappointing result led to his firing.

In five seasons, Davis put up a 125-54 overall record. Despite making three straight NCAA Tournaments, their longest run was when they made the Sweet 16 during the 2023-24 season as ACC regular-season champions.

UNC AD Bubba Cunningham Issues Statement on Hubert Davis’ Firing

After the North Carolina Tar Heels announced the firing of Hubert Davis on Tuesday, athletic director Bubba Cunningham released a statement.

He praised the coach for his contributions to the program. Cunningham also highlighted that they are looking for someone who can help them consistently achieve success.

“We appreciate all that Hubert has done for Carolina as a player, assistant coach, head coach, and community leader- he has helped make special memories we will never forget,” Cunningham said.

“This was not an easy decision because of Hubert’s tremendous character and all he has given to the program, but we must move forward in a way that allows our team to compete more consistently at an elite level,” he added.

Before becoming a coach, Davis played for the Tar Heels from 1988 to 1992. In 137 games, he averaged 11.8 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. The New York Knicks then drafted him with the 20th overall pick in the 1992 NBA draft.
