Hubert Davis Breaks His Silence After Being Fired by UNC

Now-former North Carolina Tar Heels coach Hubert Davis has reacted to the recent development in his coaching career at the college basketball level ahead of the 2026 offseason.

On Tuesday, March 24, the Tar Heels’ athletic department fired Davis as the head coach of the University of North Carolina’s men’s basketball program.

In an X post by collegiate hoops reporter Pete Nakos, a statement from Davis himself was shared in light of his recent firing. Davis has been at the helm of the UNC’s coaching staff since 2021, and for him, it was nothing less than a blessing.

Davis also asserted how thankful he is for the opportunity he was given, despite it ending prematurely. Nevertheless, he looks forward to what the future holds.

“Tonight, I was let go by the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. My desire was to continue to coach here. This opportunity has truly been such a blessing. I thank Jesus literally every day for giving me the opportunity, relationships and experiences with the kids and my staff. I am very proud of what we were able to accomplish together. My goal is to coach again in the very near future,” Davis was quoted as saying.

Davis took over the Tar Heels program, his alma mater, after long-tenured head coach Roy Williams retired five years ago. Davis’ most memorable run with the team came in his first year, the 2021-22 season, when they reached the Final Four. There, they defeated legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski‘s Duke Blue Devils in what was Krzyzewski’s final game of his illustrious career. UNC lost to Kansas Jayhawks in the championship game.

The North Carolina Tar Heels Bowed Out Of The 2026 National Tournament In The First Round

Perhaps what fueled the University of North Carolina to fire Hubert Davis is the fact that since the aforementioned 2022 national championship game berth, the UNC Tar Heels have not come close to the title.

In their most recent campaign, Davis and company were eliminated in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament by the VCU Rams with an 82-78 overtime score.
