The Hubert Davis era with the North Carolina Tar Heels came to an end on Tuesday. Following their first-round loss to the VCU Rams in this year’s NCAA Tournament, the program decided to fire him after five seasons.
Following this decision, UNC freshman star Caleb Wilson came forward to share his thoughts on the situation. In a tweet on X, the 2026 First-Team All-ACC expressed his gratitude to Davis for helping him in the short time they spent together.
“Thank you for everything coach Davis, one of the best men and coaches in my life,” Wilson wrote.
Caleb Wilson was a five-star prospect in the recruiting class of 2025. Coming out of high school, he had offers from programs like Kentucky, Ohio State, and UNC. He decided to join Hubert Davis’ team.
This season, the freshman power forward played 24 games, averaging 19.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. However, last month, he fractured his hand during their 75-66 loss to the Miami Hurricanes.
This resulted in him missing the rest of the campaign, as he underwent surgery. Wilson has been rehabilitating, missing the chance to compete in his first NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels finished their campaign with a 24-9 (12-6 ACC) record.
Scott Van Pelt Shares His Thoughts on Hubert Davis’ Firing
On Tuesday’s episode of “SportsCenter,” analyst Scott Van Pelt shared his thoughts on UNC prematurely parting ways with Hubert Davis.
He said that while the coach has a good personality, he was not a good fit for the Tar Heels.
“He is one of the most wonderful human beings you will encounter,” Pelt said. “He’s from the Carolina family, and Roy Williams wanted him to get this job, and he did. But I believe Carolina is the true blue blood that exists in the sport. And watching them being a first-round team, watching them allow a lead to slip away in the first round, it just didn’t feel like Carolina basketball.”
“I grew up watching Carolina be at a certain level. To live up to what Dean Smith did, to live up to what Roy Williams did, that’s an incredibly high mark to achieve. You’re grading him with a very sharp pencil. It makes sense to me from the outside looking in that Carolina would look to someone else to lead this basketball program, given all those banners that hang inside the Dean Dome, and they try to hang some more,” he added.
