Bill Self is one of the most reputable coaches in college basketball. He started his coaching career at Kansas as an assistant, and after almost 20 years, he became the head coach. He has been the Jayhawks’ leader ever since. In his esteemed career of over 40 years, he has spent 23 of them at Kansas.

Over the years, there have been rumors about Bill stepping down as the Kansas head coach. The rumors started swirling around when he was diagnosed with a major heart issue and underwent surgery in March 2023. He also missed the Big 12 and NCAA tournaments after being hospitalized for chest tightness and balance issues.

In July 2025, Bill was once again hospitalized due to worrying symptoms related to his heart. In January 2026, he was hospitalized as a precautionary measure. Once again, there are rumors about his retirement. However, the 63-year-old coach has broken his silence.

Kansas coach Bill Self denied rumors that he is planning to retire, telling the Kansas City Star that he remains undecided on his future with the Jayhawks. He said:

“No news. All BS. Bad info.”

Kansas suffered an exit from the NCAA tournament at the hands of Rick Pitino’s St. John’s in the second round. They lost a close game 67-65, and this was enough to spark the rumors of Bill Self’s retirement.
