Hubert Davis’ time as the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball program has come to an end. This decision comes after days of speculation among fans and pundits about his future with UNC.
Davis took over the head coaching duties in 2021, after nearly a decade of serving as an assistant. He also played for the Tar Heels from 1988 to 1992, and he knew what the program expected from him.
However, Davis failed to deliver in his five seasons with the program. He took the team to the NCAA Division I regional champion – Final Four in 2022 and won the ACC regular season title in 2024, as well as ACC Coach of the Year.
This year, the Tar Heels went on a 12-6 run in the Atlantic Coast Conference and were 24-9 overall. An early exit from the ACC Tournament after a loss against Clemson and the first-round exit from the NCAA Tournament nearly guaranteed that the Tar Heels were going to fire him.
The fans of the program have welcomed this decision. They believe that letting him go was in the best interest of the program.
“That was an easy decision to make,” a fan wrote.
“It’s over. Hubert Davis era ends at UNC. Sad for the alum, necessary for the program,” a fan wrote.
“Hubert Davis brought stability to North Carolina Tar Heels, but expectations are always sky-high in Chapel Hill. This opens the door for a major reset, next hire will be under serious pressure from day one,” a fan wrote.
“I’m not going to comment on if it was right or not, but dang, that was a brutal way to let the public know. Hubert deserved better,” a fan wrote.
“Good riddance!!! Let’s have UNC get back to winning! They need Mark Few,” a fan wrote.
“That first season set the bar so high… tough to live up to it after,” a fan wrote.
Even though it was certain after the March Madness exit that Davis and UNC were going to part ways, many believed that the program wouldn’t just fire him out of the blue.
Bubba Cunningham Thanked Hubert Davis
UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham released a statement announcing that Davis wasn’t going to return as head coach next season. In his statement, Cunningham thanked the former head coach for everything he did for the program.
“We appreciate all that Hubert has done for Carolina as a player, assistant coach, head coach, and community leader — he has helped make special memories we will never forget,” he said.
Davis also released a statement and said that he wanted to continue with the program and that he wants to coach again in the near future.
