Berke Buyuktuncel transferred to the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2024 from the UCLA Bruins. In his second season in Nebraska, he averaged 6.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1 block per game while shooting nearly 47% from the field.
The Cornhuskers went on a 28-7 run this season, including 15-5 in the conference. They made it to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament and lost 71-77 against the Iowa Hawkeyes.
A few days ago, Buyuktuncel got 28-7, representing the team’s overall record this season, tattooed on him. Earlier today, he announced that he was entering the transfer portal once again, in search of a better opportunity.
Buyuktuncel’s decision is confusing fans, as he just got the season record tattooed on him. It could be his way of marking his time with the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Regardless, some fans are unhappy with his decision, not only because he got the tattoo, but also because it’s a 28-7 record.
“Getting a 28-7 record tatted on you is very embarrassing,” a fan wrote.
“Still a memory of his accomplishments but yeah wild,” a fan wrote.
“Unfortunately, I think this is one of those cases where the agent is getting way too involved and is driving him to make a bad decision. Very unfortunate for who he is and his talent. I wish him the best, wherever he goes,” a fan wrote.
“May want to put the team name next to it and do a runniny tally for each season to keep track,” a fan wrote.
“He doesn’t want to transfer, but he needs to ensure he gets what he’s worth,” a fan wrote.
“I’m glad Fred agrees he’s not good enough. Hopefully means our nil is as improved as I heard,” a fan wrote.
Some fans still believe that Buyuktuncel will return to Nebraska. It’ll be interesting to see how many programs show interest in him.
Berke Buyuktuncel’s Message for Nebraska Fans
Buyuktuncel took to Instagram to make the transfer portal announcement. He shared several pictures, highlighting his two-year run with the Cornhuskers. Buyuktuncel penned a heartfelt note for the fans and the program.
“The culture and the people within this program are truly one of a kind. What we built here will stay with me far beyond basketball. Making NCAA history together and fighting our way to the Sweet 16 wasn’t just an achievement; it was the result of a real brotherhood,” he wrote.
He thanked head coach Fred Hoiberg, staff, teammates, and the fans for believing in him and rooting for him when he represented the program.
