Fans put UNC on the spot after the North Carolina Tar Heels showed intent to hire longtime NBA coach Michael Malone as their next head coach. Earlier, in March, after UNC suffered back-to-back first-round exits in the NCAA Tournament, the program fired head coach Hubert Davis.
Malone, whose net worth is $20 million (via Celebrity Net Worth), most recently served as the head coach of the Denver Nuggets until last season. He won the 2023 NBA championship with the Nuggets but was fired in April last year.
Fans called out the school for hiring Malone, with one comparing it to their controversial hire of Bill Belichick to lead their football team.
“Bill Belichick 2.0 UNC will never learn,” one fan wrote.
“Interesting hire in the days of NIL. Great Xs and O’s guy but how will he handle the new age of the transfer portal,” one fan reacted.
“At least Billy Donovan had won in college before…,” another added.
“Good hire in terms of a basketball mind, but absurd that a school like UNC can’t get a top of the line current college coach. It’s a completely different game,” one fan wrote.
“Fail by UNC,” one fan commented.
“I’m intrigued by the hire – more so because of the current college recruiting environment – if he can hire some experienced assistants who excel in recruiting and pair it with a GM versed in managing a roster in the NIL era then why can’t it work out?” one fan asked.
“Hiring a pro coach worked out so well for Carolina in football so why not do it in basketball too!!” one fan wrote sarcastically.
Tar Heels New HC Michael Malone Has Already Ties With UNC Through Family Connection
While a deal is being finalized to bring Michael Malone to UNC, he already has ties in Chapel Hill.
Malone’s daughter attends UNC and plays for the school’s volleyball program. Malone has even been referred to as a “Tar Heel dad” because of it.
This would mean Malone is already familiar with the program as a parent, having trusted the program’s campus, athletic department and the environment, assuming he played a part in her daughter’s decision to come to Chapel Hill.
