Arkansas basketball’s hunt for its next NCAA title has been going on for over three decades. They won their only title in 1994 and were the runners-up the following year. Since then, Arkansas hasn’t been to the championship game.
They hired John Calipari in 2024 with the hope that he would make them title contenders again. So far, in his two seasons with Arkansas, Calipari has reached the Sweet 16, only to lose and be eliminated from the tournament.
This year, they lost 109-88 in the Sweet 16 against the Arizona Wildcats. With the transfer portal open since Tuesday, players across the country are looking for better opportunities. Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks are also affected.
Guard DJ Wagner, forwards Karter Knox and Karim Rtail, and center Elmir Dzafic have entered the transfer portal. None of these players were regular starters for Arkansas.
No player has announced their commitment to Arkansas basketball so far. Several players are being approached by Arkansas, but nothing has been finalized yet.
Calipari’s team has reached out to players like Isaiah Johnson (Colorado), Terrence Brown (Utah), Alex Wilkins (Furman), and Terrence Hill Jr. (VCU). Other than that, they have incoming freshman commitments, including 5-star guard Jordan Smith Jr. and 4-star wings JJ Andrews and Abdou Toure.
Arkansas Basketball Won SEC Title Under John Calipari
While Arkansas will have to wait to see success in the NCAA Tournament, Calipari delivered their first SEC title since 2000, defeating the Vanderbilt Commodores 86-75 in the title game.
“When you’ve done this a long time, and you’re in the business of young people, it is about the name on the back of the jersey. Yes, we’re doing it for Arkansas.. I’ve kind of been that way and done alright at every school I’ve been at. You can say it’s wrong. You can either be P’d off or be peed on,” Calipari said after the title win.
His tenure with the Razorbacks has looked promising so far. If Calipari can build a strong roster during the transfer portal window, he might be able to bring Arkansas its second NCAA title.
