Hubert Davis was recently let go by the North Carolina Tar Heels. He became the head coach of his alma mater in 2021, but did not meet the program’s expectations. Arizona Wildcats head coach Tommy Lloyd is one of the names rumored to be linked to the high-profile job.
Lloyd was appointed Arizona’s coach in 2021 and has done well compared to Davis. The Wildcats have a chance to win the national championship this season.
Lloyd was recently asked about the prospect of coaching North Carolina, and he downplayed the rumors, saying his focus was fully on Arizona.
“That’s absolutely true. There’s gonna be a great coach; this is a great program. I didn’t say when. You know, and people are gonna speculate all they want, but guys, this team has my full focus. Nothing, nothing, I promise you nothing, is knocking me off that path. You might call them ‘distractions,’ but it’s cause you’re distracted. That doesn’t mean I’m distracted, or we are distracted,” Lloyd answered.
“You know, it’s pretty cool once you get some experience in this deal, and your player or your coach has been at it a while, you get pretty good at that. Eliminating distractions. So I think I am pretty good at that. And I just can’t to get to practice today. Go meet with the staff right now or probably a little bit late. I am ready to go have a good practice,” he added.
Fans react to Tommy Lloyd dismissing North Carolina head coach job rumors
Fans online doubted the conviction with which Arizona head coach dismissed the rumors ahead of the crucial Final Four game against the Michigan Wolverines. However, some are still hopeful that UNC might be able to sway him in the near future.
“Nothing says commitment like denying the distractions exist while secretly planning world domination,” one fan said.
“That’s exactly what I would say if I was distracted tbh,” one Michigan fan chimed in.
“Arizona should offer him lifetime deal & name a building after him. Otherwise he’s out,” one fan suggested.
“Come on home Tommy,” one UNC fan commented.
“I don’t think he can say anything else. Certainly can’t say that he’s in discussions on an extension and raise while preparing for the biggest game in 25 years AND while claiming he’s NOT thinking about anything else then the team in front of him,” one fan speculated.
“Why can’t Tommy just straight up say he’s staying at Arizona?” another wondered.
Arizona faces Michigan in the Final Four on Saturday. A win would set up a national championship clash with Illinois or UConn.
