Milan Momcilovic’s commitment to the Kentucky Wildcats was important to Mark Pope, as it helped the program turn what looked like a disappointing transfer portal into one filled with hope and belief. While Pope’s own efforts to convince Momcilovic of the move ultimately worked, an NBA star was working behind the scenes to make it happen too.
Momcilovic revealed that Tyler Herro pushed him to move to Kentucky. Herro has a strong connection to the city, having played his college basketball in Lexington as well.
“Tyler reached out to me,” Momcilovic told the media on Thursday.
“Chris (Herro) and my dad are pretty good friends because they used to coach together on the EYBL, so he was calling me and he was obviously telling me, ‘Go to Kentucky, go to Kentucky.’ No, I really like the Herro family — obviously, I listen to them. But it was my decision at the end of the day.”
Chris Herro is Tyler’s father and Momcilovic’s connection with the family goes back a bit. Momcilovic stood out for Team Herro on the Nike EYBL circuit, which was sponsored by Tyler Herro himself. Tyler’s dad, Chris, was and remains the coach of the team, hence forming a connection with the Momcilovic family.
Milan Momcilovic’s Interest in Kentucky Goes Back a Long Way
It appears that the Iowa State transfer’s commitment to Kentucky has been a long time coming. Back in 2022, Momcilovic was interviewed about the possibility of joining the Wildcats under then head coach John Calipari, and he seemed very interested.
“Yes, for sure (I’m interested),” he said in April 2022. “Tyler Herro went there, his dad’s my coach, obviously. He’s pulling for me and he’s talking to Coach John Calipari.”
“If Kentucky reaches out that would be really cool,” he said again soon after. “Just to see how interested they are in me.”
