AJ Dybantsa joined the BYU Cougars program with high expectations from fans. He had a lot of hype around his name, and fans wanted to see if he could live up to it. After 35 games in this season, he proved that he deserved all the buzz.
Dybantsa put up jaw-dropping numbers this season. He averaged 25.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.1 steals per game while shotting 51% from the field. He is now slated to be a top-two pick in the upcoming NBA Draft.
Many believe that Dybantsa could potentially be the No. 1 pick. With his two-way potential and athleticism, there’s no stopping Dybantsa. While his draft projection is up for debate, Dybantsa has had some ideas for his future in the NBA.
Dybantsa went on ESPN’s First Take after committing to the BYU Cougars. During his conversation, Stephen A. Smith asked him if he had a preferred NBA team for his future.
“When you think about you on an NBA team, because that’s a dream and that’s obviously going to be a reality… Is there a system out there that you think is tailor-made for you?” Stephen A. asked.
Dybantsa said he could see himself with the Magic or the Spurs. When asked why he chose those two teams, he said:
“How you think me and Wemby would play?”
Stephen A. was surprised by the answer. Victor Wembanyama has been improving every year as his numbers are consistently going up. He is just 22 years old and is on track to have a potential Hall of Fame career.
If the Spurs manage to bring Dybantsa in and pair him up with Wemby, they could terrorize the league for a decade, if not more.
AJ Dybantsa on Wanting to Play Alongside Victor Wembanyama
In January 2025, Dybantsa traveled to Paris for the NBA’s Global Games and to get an up-close look at Wembanyama. During a conversation with ESPN, he revealed that he wanted the Spurs to draft him in 2026.
“I think Victor is just ridiculous; the things he does are just crazy,” he said. “I just think we would’ve been a crazy duo. Now the odds of that happening are very slim. But I mean, it was just a thought that came up in my mind when he got drafted.”
Although it was nearly impossible for him to predict where he’d end up as an NBA rookie, Dybantsa was hopeful about joining forces with the San Antonio Spurs star.
