“$30M”: Former NBA Star Claims He Would Have Made More Than Cooper Flagg if He Had Played in NIL Era

Cooper Flagg made quite a name for himself during his college career with the Duke Blue Devils. In June 2025, longtime sports journalist Howard Bryant reported that Cooper Flagg made more than $28 million through NIL deals in just one year at Duke.

On Saturday’s episode of “The Assist with Kyle Tucker,” ex-NBA star John Wall made a bold claim. According to Wall, he would have made more money than Flagg had the modern NIL structure existed during his college days.

“Everybody asks me. I say I got a dance, I got a song. I’m handsome. (I would have made) $30 million (in NIL),” Wall said. “They said Cooper got $20 when he was at Duke. I think (I get $30 million in NIL). I got a song, I got a dance.”

Wall played for the Kentucky Wildcats for one season, averaging 16.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game. He also popularized the John Wall dance move, which involves flexing the arm and twisting the wrist. Troop 41 dedicated a song to the ex-NBA star called “Do the John Wall.”

The Washington Wizards drafted Wall with the No. 1 pick in 2010. He also went on to play for the Rockets and Clippers and was named an NBA All-Star five times over 11 seasons. Wall announced his retirement from basketball last August.

How did Cooper Flagg perform in his rookie season with the Mavericks in the NBA?

After Cooper Flagg was honored as the National College Player of the Year and a consensus First-Team All-American during his stint with the Duke Blue Devils, he was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the No. 1 pick.

The forward did not disappoint in his rookie season. In 70 games, Flagg averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. He was named NBA Rookie of the Year.

However, despite Flagg’s efforts, the Dallas Mavericks failed to make the postseason. They finished 12th in the Western Conference with a 25-56 record. Coach Jason Kidd was fired after five seasons and Dusty May was hired as his replacement in June.
