AJ Dybantsa is widely projected to be the No. 1 pick at the 2026 NBA Draft. With Darryn Peterson slipping a few places, Dybantsa’s performance at the 2026 NBA Draft Combine has nearly cemented him as the top pick.
During a media interaction at the combine, Dybantsa was asked to name his best starting five in the NBA.
Dybantsa ended up curating an interesting lineup, featuring some veterans. He also included himself.
“I’m going to get cancelled for some of this. I’ll put LeBron [James] at the one. I’ll put [Nikola] Jokic at the five. I’ll play the three. I’ll put KD [Kevin Durant] at the four. And I’ll have [Stephen] Curry at the two, but he’s strictly there to just shoot,” he said.
While most of his picks are conventional, the positions that he chose are interesting. We don’t see many people put Curry at the shooting guard position.
Interestingly, Dybantsa put himself at the small forward position and gave LeBron James the point guard spot. James is arguably the greatest small forward we’ve ever seen in basketball.
The lineup also showed that Dybantsa has a lot of confidence in himself and his game.
AJ Dybantsa Wants to Play with Victor Wembanyama
Dybantsa may not have included Victor Wembanyama on his starting five, but that’s the player he wants to team up with. The 19-year-old has repeatedly stated his wish to play alongside the San Antonio Spurs star.
Dybantsa flew to Paris for the NBA’s Global Games in January 2025. While talking to ESPN at the time, he said he’d want the Spurs to draft him.
“I think Victor is just ridiculous; the things he does are just crazy,” he said. “I just think we would’ve been a crazy duo. Now the odds of that happening are very slim. But I mean, it was just a thought that came up in my mind when he got drafted.”
He asked Stephen A. Smith, “How you think me and Wemby would play?” during his appearance on First Take after committing to BYU.
