Who Is Malachi Toney’s Father? All We Know About Miami Freshman’s Personal Life

Malachi Toney comes from a world of football royalty. He is the son of Antonio Brown, a former NFL wide receiver, though he is confused for his more controversial counterpart, former Steelers star of the same name.

Brown played college football at West Virginia University before spending a few seasons in the NFL. He spent most of his professional career playing for the Buffalo Bills (2003) and the Washington Commanders (2004-2005). During his professional career, he was known for his speed on special teams, recording over 1,500 kick return yards.

Though Toney draws his football lineage from his father, his personal life has been heavily shaped by his mother, Shatravia “Toni” Toney. She is a US Postal Service worker and raised Toney as a single mother in the Miami Gardens area. She has been a constant fixture through his recruitment and collegiate career, often described by the local media as the “loudest voice” in his corner. Toney often credits her sacrifices for his success, noting that her work ethic modelled the discipline he needed to succeed as an athlete.

Malachi Toney is a native of South Florida and is defined by his roots in Liberty City and Miami Gardens. He attended American Heritage High School in Plantation, where he was a standout star, reclassified from the Class of 2026 to 2025 to join the Miami Hurricanes a year early. His decision to stay home and play for the Hurricanes was significant as he grew up in the shadow of the program. Playing for Miami has allowed his family, particularly his mother, to attend his games regularly. This adds a layer of hometown emotion to his rise as a freshman sensation in the ACC.

Why Is Malachi Toney Often Called Baby Jesus?

Malachi Toney earned the moniker ‘Baby Jesus’ at eight years old in South Florida’s ruthless youth leagues. And he didn’t just live up to the hype, he accelerated it. Tony reclassified, skipped his senior year, and arrived at Miami at age 17. His teammates at Miami were skeptical at the start; but now they believe.

. “I’m man of faith,” said lineman Francis Mauigoa, as per USA Today. “To be called Baby Jesus? I had to see this.”

Quarterback Carson Beck described the freshman’s talent as “ridiculous.” Beck says he has never seen anything like Toney before and added, “He can do whatever he wants on the field.” But Toney describes this as a “lifestyle.” He knows he is a weapon in every sense, even in completing passes. Now, with the title game looming ahead, he might have the best trick to play in helping Miami secure the national championship.
