Layton von Brandt is making the college football world wait for his commitment. The four-star offensive tackle has moved up his declaration date, and programs like Notre Dame and Florida are among the front-runners.
He will announce on Monday, May 18, on the Rivals YouTube channel. The 6’6 290 OT is a no. 5-ranked offensive tackle and the no. 75th-ranked overall player in the country.
While Florida is in the race to sign him, Notre Dame seems to have a clear advantage over them. Other than these two programs, Auburn and Penn State are also in the mix.
The reason why Notre Dame seems to have an advantage is because of how highly von Brandt has spoken of them.
“Notre Dame is in a very good spot,” he told Blue & Gold. “I feel like this isn’t fake momentum. It’s just like, ‘Hey, it’s going to be tough.’ The other schools up there with them — it’s going to come down to how official visits go. That’s where I think they’ll separate themselves.”
It’s worth noting that von Brandt made an early commitment to Penn State. He was headed for Penn State, but the program decided to move on from head coach James Franklin and his staff.
That change made von Brandt reconsider his commitment. The good thing is that the programs and their fans wouldn’t have to wait until July, which was the initial announcement date, to know which team gets von Brandt.
It’s interesting to see Notre Dame leading the charge here because they already have a stacked roster with some of the best OTs in the country. However, landing a top 5 offensive tackle will only make them stronger.
Jackson Hill Flipped His Commitment From UCLA to Notre Dame
Marcus Freeman’s Notre Dame Fighting Irish had a great run last year. Their season ended in disappointment due to the controversial playoff decision, but Freeman made his team a desirable landing spot for top prospects.
Freeman and Notre Dame managed to sign Jackson Hill, making him flip his commitment from the UCLA Bruins.
“Notre Dame is the only school I would have flipped from ULCA for,” Hill said as per On3. “It was a hard decision because I really love UCLA and the coaching staff. It was so hard to tell coach Hill and coach Chesney that I was making the change and going somewhere else.”
Although Hill spoke highly of UCLA, his commitment to Notre Dame is a testament to the reputation Freeman has managed to build for his program.
