Steve Sarkisian’s recent comment about Ole Miss handing out degrees to student athletes caught and raised many eyebrows, including Stephen A. Smith’s.
During Thursday’s episode of “First Take,” Smith sent a message to the Texas head coach and said it was a low blow.
Smith affirmed that while he likes Sarkisian and respects him as a coach, he added that there was no reason to take a shot at Ole Miss like that.
ESPN also said Ole Miss didn’t deserve that and said that on his trip to Ole Miss, he was treated in a first-class manner by the athletic director.
“All you can do is laugh at this guy at this point. Yall realize if we didnt respond to this guy’s takes or opinions he wouldn’t exist as he is today. Dude is a joke.” One fan reacted.
“It doesn’t matter if SAS approves of the comment! What matters is, did Sark lie? If he lied about the academic requirements then by all means be outraged…and I understand “basket weaving” is hyperbole but haven’t seen OM say it’s not true!” another fan pointed out.
“Oh boo hoo. There wasnt anyone hurt or affected by the comment. Trying to make something a bigger deal than it actually is. Stephen A. fake outrage is too much sometimes.” another fan shared their thoughts.
“Stephen A Smith is always on the wrong side 😂😂😂 whatever his take isn it’s usually 99% wrong.” Another fan wrote.
“Why was it okay that Pete Golding used his past against him in recruiting though?” another fan questioned.
“But it’s ok for Pete to take a shot at Sarks sobriety?? You can’t police how somebody responds to disrespect. Plus the truth hurts.” Another fan said.
Stephen A. Smith Speaks on Why He Thinks Texas Wasn’t Coached Well by Steve Sarkisian in 2025
In the same interview, Smith said he believes Sarkisian was too busy protecting Arch Manning in the 2025 college football season and ended up not doing the job he has shown he can do in the past.
The ESPN analyst added that while he believes Sarkisian has some making up to do, he also believes the Texas head coach is one of a kind and that the Longhorns are lucky to have him.
Smith also predicted that the 2026 college football season would be a lot better for the Longhorns than the year 2025 was.
