The topic of expanding the College Football Playoffs (CFP) is one that understandably has mixed reviews across the board. Several fears continue to be raised about expansion of one of college sports’ premier events, and making a consistent decision on the same cannot be an easy one.
The topic of expanding the NCAA Tournament in college basketball came under fire for years before the eventual decision was taken anyway, and now with college football under the scanner, a similar situation arises.
There are some who believe it’s the only way forward in the NIL era, but a vast majority are still against the traditional scheme of things, even if that too has evolved over the years to some extent.
So when SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey was questioned about the matter, there was always going to be some backlash, but fans seem annoyed that their opinions don’t appear to have as much weight as they should to what is still the premier conference in college football.
“My opinion, it merits paying attention..Not like it’s scientific research, kind of mass opinions. I don’t disregard it, but it also shouldn’t be the primary force. It’s a piece of information,” Sankey said while addressing the press about possibly expanding the CFP to 24 teams.
Fans Torch Sankey for “Primary Force” Comment
Fans didn’t seem to take too kindly to the mention of “primary force” in particular, sparking angered reactions in the comments.
“Because in Sankeys mind all that matters is TV money. It’s pretty obvious every year that no one outside of the top 5 or so teams have a chance. Fine make the field 12 like now or 16. But 24 is lame. A transparent money grab,” one fan said.
“i.e. “if any fan seriously thinks what they say or think matters to us, they should know by now, it doesn’t,” another commented.
“It 1000 percent should be the driving force,” one remarked.
“What is the “primary force” if I may ask,” another questioned.
“He’s a pompous bumptious arse,” one bluntly put it.
Safe to say Sankey still isn’t making too many friends in the college football community.
