After his sudden exit from LSU in 2021, Coach O himself, Ed Orgeron, is back in Baton Rouge. The former LSU head coach was very successful in his stint there, winning the national title with the Tigers before leaving the school all of a sudden surprising many. He was hired by new LSU head coach Lane Kiffin and will now be working as a special assistant to recruiting and defense.
The question now is, why did he left in the first place? He led the Tigers to the national title in 2019, but the next two seasons were rough, only having a 9-8 record in the last two years of his tenure there, He ultimately stepped down and admitted it was because of the team’s lackluster seasons after winning the national title.
“The last couple of years are not the standard of LSU,” he explained in a statement. “But I have no regrets. I know I went to work as hard as I could every day, tried as hard as I could every day, and that’s all you can ask.”
Ed Orgeron was once one of the highest-paid coaches in college football and was a national title winner. After he left LSU, he stepped away from college football and his sudden return is surprising many. However, he does have a past relationship with Lane Kiffin, with the two having worked together on many teams, including as assistants under Pete Carroll in USC.
With the legendary coach in his staff, Lane Kiffin is expected to step up his recruiting efforts and also beed up his defensive capabilities, especially with Ed Orgeron being known for building up a team’s defenses.
Lane Kiffin All Praises For New Assistant Coach Ed Orgeron
When Lane Kiffin added Ed Orgeron to his staff, it showed how serious he is in winning the national title for LSU. In his announcement, the new Tigers head coach was very positive in introducing his latest staff member.
“Coach O understands my expectations and commitment to being a championship program. I look forward to seeing him with recruits and his intensity working with our defensive players,” said Kiffin.
With Coach O now back in Baton Rouge, LSU may be seen more as one of the biggest contenders next season. However, the coach’s addition also shows that there is a long-term vision for the Tigers.
