Bill Belichick may be one of the greatest football coaches ever, but sometimes, that is not enough to get high school players to commit. One of his top targets from the Class of 2027, EDGE Jayson Dawson from Santaluces Community High School in Florida, has committed to Miami, choosing the Hurricanes over the Tar Heels, as well as the Georgia Bulldogs, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.
Dawson is currently a three-star prospect, ranked No. 722 in the country and the No. 64 linebacker. He is also the No. 80 player in the state of Florida for his class. This was a big loss for North Carolina, as many saw it as a close fight between Georgia and UNC, but Miami had swooped in at the very last moment.
The move allows Dawson to stay home in Florida, but it also forces Bill Belichick to go back to the drawing board for more defensive players.
Originally, On3 had Georgia as the favorite to land the EDGE linebacker with 40.9%. This was followed closely by North Carolina at 35.8% chance, and then Kentucky at 17.9% chance. However, he ultimately chose home and went to Miami, which On3 only had at a less than 1% chance to get him.
Miami One of the Newest Schools to Offer Jayson Dawson
While Bill Belichick and other schools have been circling Jayson Dawson for quite some time now, Miami is relatively new to the race for the linebacker. However, it seems that this was the school Dawson had been waiting for.
Miami had only offered Dawson a scholarship 11 days before he made his commitment. This was why the Canes were given less than a 1% chance to get him. In contrast, Georgia, Kentucky, NC State, Georgia State, Purdue and North Carolina have all been trying to recruit him for much longer. However, the Canes have reportedly pushed hard for this in-state talent, beating out some big names like Bill Belichick for him in the end.
