With the NCAA considering a ban on Brendan Sorsby after the quarterback’s gambling addiction came to light, Texas Tech immediately lost its status as one of the favorites to win the national championship. The investigation into the Sorsby gambling scandal is still ongoing, but Texas Tech is now seeing its title odds plummet in real time.
During his College Football Show podcast, NCAA football analyst Josh Pate talked about the Brendan Sorsby scandal and what could come next for the Red Raiders, and it is not looking good. Pate echoed the opinions of many other analysts that Texas Tech would not be faring as well as initially thought, with their QB1 possibly going to be banned.
“Let me address the less serious matter first, and that’s the on the- field part for Texas Tech this year. There is no backup option here. There’s a literal backup. His name is Will Hammond who has started before who is not a bad player. They had to use him last year. He was pressed into duty last year. He’s 6’3. He’s 205. He’s a red shirt sophomore. He was a top 200 prospect in a couple of cycles ago in recruiting. So, he’s not a bad player. It’s just that I think most people’s feel on Texas Tech’s top end potential with Will Hammond is beneath that of winning a national championship,” (2:02)
As Pate noted, while Sorsby is seen as a quarterback who could lead the Red Raiders to a national title, the same cannot be said for his backup, Will Hammond, who despite being a solid player, may not be up to the task in leading the team to the national championship. While he could still prove doubters wrong, many in the school are believing their chances of winning it all have gone down significantly.
BYU and Utah Could Challenge Texas Tech Dominance in Big 12 As Fall Out From Brendan Sorsby Scandal
Heading into the new season, Texas Tech was widely seen as the favorite to win the Big 12 again. However, after reports came in that QB1 Brendan Sorsby made over $10,000 in wagers, it seems that two schools may be having a better chance of winning the conference.
BYU had been busy in recruitment and have gotten several big transfer portal acquisitions. Meanwhile, Utah has emerged strong despite losing head coach Kyle Whittingham to Michigan with some of their best players returning and getting some big players on the defensive end.
