Deion Sanders seems to have accepted the fact that his Colorado program will likely lose out on top players to more financially privileged universities.
Speaking to the media recently on Colorado trying to retain players against the transfer portal, Sanders admitted that, with so much money floating around the college football ranks, it’s simply part of the business now.
“We wish we could retain players throughout, but you gotta understand with all this money floating for average nowadays, you could have a backup backup who backs up the backup go get a quarter of a million dollars.”, said Sanders.
The comments come just a few months removed from Sanders losing one of his top players to the transfer portal, that being left tackle Jordan Seaton, who departed for LSU back in January. Seaton was likely highly sought after by head coach Lane Kiffin, who is hoping to end LSU’s six-season drought of College Football Playoff appearances.
Standing at six-foot-five, 330 pounds, Seaton will be the anchor of the Tigers’ offensive line in 2026 and is already expected to be a high first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. He made quite a name for himself blocking for current Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders during his time with the Buffaloes.
Last season, in his sophomore campaign, despite being sidelined for the final three games of the year, Seaton managed to earn second-team All-Big 12 honors and allowed only seven pressures and two sacks in nine games, per Pro Football Focus.
He’ll now block the blindside of quarterback Sam Leavitt, whom LSU acquired from Arizona State.
Deion Sanders and Colorado Buffaloes Look to Bounce Back in 2026
It was a rough season for Sanders and the Buffaloes in 2025 after losing Shedeur Sanders to the NFL. The Buffaloes dropped to a 3-9 overall record on the season, finishing 15th in the Big 12 Conference.
The Buffaloes lost five straight games to close out the year, one of which was a lopsided 42-17 defeat to No. 25-ranked Arizona State. The loss of Seaton will certainly stifle their chances of making it back to conference championship contention, but Coach Prime will do everything in his power to have his players ready for game day.
It will also be interesting to see if Sanders receives NFL coaching interest next season. He was heavily rumored to be in consideration for several head coaching vacancies last season. However, the Pro Football Hall of Famer instead extended his contract with the Buffaloes to remain at the collegiate level.
