Chandler Morris Eligibility: Why Is Virginia QB Suing NCAA After Playing 6 Season?

Virginia Cavaliers quarterback Chandler Morris is the latest college football player to ask for extra eligibility, as the NCAA is seeing an increasing trend of big names trying to get one more year.

After the NCAA denied his appeal to get a waiver for an extra year, Morris has gone to the Virginia state court to file a lawsuit seeking a medical redshirt for the 2022 season. Ben O’Neil and JP Kernisan of the Quinn Emanuel law firm will be representing the quarterback in this lawsuit.

Why Is Virginia QB Chandler Morris Suing NCAA After Playing 6 Season?

Despite playing six seasons across four schools (Oklahoma, TCU, North Texas, and Virginia), Chandler Morris wants one more college football season under his belt.

He started his career in 2020 with Oklahoma, but because of COVID-19 exemption rules, that season won’t be counted to his eligibility. The next three seasons, he was with TCU. He opted for a medical redshirt in 2021.

In 2022, he was named the starter but had an injury in the first game. He returned three games later only to back up new starter Max Duggan, who led the program to the national championship game.

Morris is asking for a medical redshirt for the 2022 season as he suffered a knee injury and faced mental health challenges. Even though he played in limited games, by norm, the NCAA has counted the year to his eligibility.

As per the NCAA rules, student-athletes are allowed five years to play four seasons. The NCAA counted Morris’ 2022 season since he appeared in more games than the NCAA allowed for a medical redshirt.

Chandler Morris Not Alone Knocking the Doors of NCAA

Chandler Morris is not alone. Several other college quarterbacks have taken legal action to challenge NCAA eligibility decisions. This includes Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, Tennessee’s Joey Aguilar and Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia.

Chambliss has been granted an extra year by the judge after previously being denied by the NCAA for an extra year. Pavia filed the case in 2024 and has seen a landmark judgment land in his favor. However, Aguilar’s case was denied.

If Morris wins or obtains the injunction, he could return to play for Virginia in 2026 with another season of eligibility.
