Mario Cristobal’s Jibe at Kirby Smart Goes Viral as Carson Beck Coaching Becomes Talking Point

Miami Hurricanes head coach Mario Cristobal played jokes on Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. The little throwback came during both coaches’ presence at the Football Writers Association of America Dinner/Steve Spurrier Awards event.

After taking some shots from Smart, Cristobal playfully roasted the Bulldogs head coach, referencing the success of quarterback Carson Beck, who first played for Smart but led Miami to the national championship game in his final season. Cristobal basically said Smart wasn’t able to extract the best out of Beck as he did.

“I’ll tell you what, the first thing is, that’s a great piece right there to watch what a player like Carson Beck could do with great coaching,” Cristobal said. “You know what I mean? No, seriously, let’s give it up for Kirby Smart. Let’s give it up for Kirby Smart. If it wasn’t for all his years of pre-NIL, we wouldn’t have NIL right now. But, uh, did Kirby Smart leave yet?”

Carson Beck did incredibly well in his first and only season with Miami, taking them to the championship game against all odds. He has now entered the 2026 NFL draft, where he’s expected to get picked on Day 2.

The roast about NIL came after Smart joked that Cristobal shouldn’t be allowed to sit near University of Georgia cornerback Ellis Robinson.

Mario Cristobal Calls Out SEC Champions By Stating Facts

Cristobal went a step ahead and roasted SEC Champions Georgia Bulldogs by mentioning his 5-0 record against SEC opponents this past season.

“But no, you’ve got to give a guy like Kirby credit, you know what I mean? When you have all that time to sit at home watching us play on TV throughout the playoffs, when we don’t take care of business, you know, but congratulations on the SEC and the championship; that’s awesome,” Cristobal said. “We were 5–0 against the SEC; I don’t know what you were, but… Man, I’m in enemy territory too. I’ve got a feeling some of you are on Kirby’s side.”

Kirby Smart also jabbed at Georgia and Athens, saying Miami had “more than one restaurant.”

“We have more than one restaurant in Miami, as opposed to Athens. I certainly appreciate being here, and I know I could go on for a little bit now.”

All of this were lighthearted jokes between two coaches who once used to coach Alabama Crimson Tide together.
