Ed Orgeron served as a long-time coach of the LSU Tigers. He was also the head coach of the program from 2016 to 2021 before taking a break from coaching. However, as the Tigers prepare for a new journey under coach Lane Kiffin, he decided to add him as a part of his new coaching staff.
Last week, the LSU Tigers hired Ed Orgeron as a special assistant to recruiting and defense. He returns to Baton Rouge after a five-year hiatus. On Tuesday’s episode of the “Triple Option Podcast,” former Ohio State coach shared his thoughts on the hiring.
“I’ve known coach O forever,” Meyer said. “And I use the term often, certified nut job is what he is. I mean, he rips his shirt off. But I’ll tell you what, he was arguably the best defensive line coach in the game.
“And then he was one of the great recruiters for many, many years. I recruited against him, coached against him. So, this is a no-brainer.”
During his stint as the head coach of the LSU Tigers, Ed Orgeron put up a 51-20 overall record. During the 2019 season, he led the program to a national championship following a 42-25 victory over the Clemson Tigers.
Lane Kiffin gets honest about Ed Orgeron’s return to LSU
Last season, the LSU Tigers finished with a 7-6 record, failing to make the playoffs. They fired Brian Kelly in October, while Frank Wilson served as the interim coach for the remainder of the games.
In November, the program hired Lane Kiffin as the 34th head coach. On Tuesday, he shared his thoughts on having Ed Orgeron back as a part of the coaching staff for his debut at Baton Rouge.
“It just seemed like the perfect time to bring him back,” Kiffin said. “We talked for a number of days about it. We had to figure out exactly what it was. I feel awesome about it.
Kiffin agreed to a seven-year, $91 million deal with the Tigers, making him one of the highest-paid college football coaches. He spent the last six seasons with the Ole Miss Rebels and put up a 55-19 record.
