Bryce Underwood Spring Game Status: Will Michigan Star QB Play Today?

As Bryce Underwood is likely aware, the NFL draft is heating up, but for those who are not going pro in the coming days, April is still a notable month on the college football calendar. Players still involved in college football have to put their best foot forward and handle tasks for coaches in relation to the spring game and practices.

One of the lingering questions has been whether Underwood would take part in the spring game, potentially opening himself up to injury risks. According to Big Ten Network Analyst Jake Butt via the Detroit Free Press in a Friday report, Underwood is set to play the first quarter of the Maize vs. Blue game on Saturday.

Either way, it will be an opportunity for Underwood to suit up and get loose on a gridiron almost like an NFL veteran might in a preseason contest.

Underwood, who wrapped up his freshman season with 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions, will look to prove that he has taken a step forward in the months since the end of the season.

What Kyle Whittingham Said About Bryce Underwood And Other Starters

Coach Kyle Whittingham had said earlier in April that some proven players would not play, which raised questions. It is unclear whether he has amended that thought or otherwise labeled Underwood as a non-proven player.

“The main thrust is, [it’s] a great chance for us to get a good in-depth, concentrated look at the 2s and 3s,” Whittingham said. “There’s going to be a lot of 1s that don’t participate. We’re not going to put a guy in there that we know what he can do, and he’s where he needs to be, and he’s played hundreds of snaps here − there’s no reason for that.”

Whittingham’s decision to put in Underwood hints that the coach might be opening up to rethinking his position on his quarterback. As the team’s new coach, Whittingham is still learning the ins and outs of his roster. It seems that might not stop with the quarterback position.
