Texas five-star cornerback commit John Meredith III weighed in on Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire’s repeated calls for the two programs to renew their rivalry.
Speaking to Rivals, Meredith said, “I would like Texas to play Texas Tech so people can know what’s the real difference between them.”
The comments come after McGuire used Big 12 Media Days to express his desire to face Texas, saying the Red Raiders would be ready “tomorrow” if the Longhorns were ready.
Meredith’s remarks quickly circulated across social media, prompting strong reactions from fans on both sides of the rivalry. Not everyone agreed with the commit’s confidence.
“Texas could hardly win the conference in 28 years. They ain’t that good,” one fan wrote.
“Too bad that coach in Austin likes to talk about teams that aren’t on the schedule. Adding them defeats the purpose,” another user posted.
“He chose Texas for ‘business’ reasons. Our recruits come for football and development. There’s a huge difference and it would show on the field,” one fan commented.
“But Texas fans say they don’t think about Tech,” another user wrote.
One Red Raiders fan even suggested Meredith was avoiding the matchup altogether, adding, “He really doesn’t want the smoke.”
Joey McGuire Keeps Pushing For Texas Showdown
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian indirectly criticized another program’s schedule in May, and the remarks were widely interpreted as being aimed at Texas Tech.
“There’s a team in our state that plays in another conference that has a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and our threes, we could go undefeated, and they’ll probably make the CFP this year,” he said.
Speaking during Big 12 Media Days, Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire doubled down on that stance.
“We’re ready to go right now. We’ll play [Texas] tomorrow,” he said, while also expressing interest in future matchups against Texas A&M and SMU.
The programs have not met since the 2023 season, where Texas closed its season with a dominant 57-7 victory over Texas Tech.
With Texas now firmly established in the SEC and Texas Tech remaining in the Big 12, no future meeting is currently scheduled. However, as the offseason continues, fans on both sides appear eager for the rivalry to return.
