Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper was criticized by fans for his unconventional challenge during the series finale against the Pirates at PNC Park.
In the first inning with two outs and a 0-0 count, Harper was at the plate and did not swing at the first pitch, which was a 97-mph sinker from Paul Skenes just inside the strike zone.
The home plate umpire called it a strike, and surprisingly, Harper challenged the call even though it was early in the game and he would have been only 0-1 in the count. The on-field decision was upheld, and Harper and the Phillies lost the challenge early in the game.

Fans were quick to lash out at the two-time NL MVP.
“That’s a clown challenge, bro,” one fan commented.
“This is why he’s not elite,” another fan commented.
“Harper has technically set an unbeatable record for worst situational hitter challenge: another failed challenge in the exact same situation would tie but not beat this, and a challenge in any other situation would have a higher impact on run expectancy,” yet another fan commented.
Some fans questioned the timing of the challenge since it occurred during Harper’s first pitch in his initial at-bat. Others shared different opinions on the ABS challenge system, which is being used for the first time in the big leagues this season.
“Switching 0-1 to 1-0 doesn’t do a whole lot in terms of the game situation. Sure it helps the micro level as that at bat, but overall doesn’t impact much. Changing 3-1 to 4-0 gives you a walk and a base runner which extends the inning and could be a potential run,” one fan commented.
“A good challenge awards your team an ‘extra out.’ Winning a 3-0 challenge brings 4 batters to the plate minimum. 0-1 vs. 1-0 is nowhere near the same level of gain,” another fan commented.
“Genuinely shocked this hasn’t happened more yet. Teams should absolutely have baseline, easily remembered rules of only challenge with RISP or a full count, because like 20 successful 0-0 bases empty challenges are worth less than a single successful high-leverage challenge,” yet another fan commented.
After a Slow Start, Bryce Harper Has Finally Found His Rhythm at the Plate
Harper and the Phillies began the 2026 season slowly. However, with Philadelphia now going 8-2 in their last 10 games, the left-handed slugger has been delivering some solid at-bats lately. Harper’s stats include a .277 batting average, 12 home runs, 30 RBIs, and a .922 OPS across 48 games, indicating a projection of over 40 home runs and 100 RBIs for the season.
The Phillies now hold a 25-23 record for the season, securing the second position in the NL East division, seven games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves. Philadelphia has won six consecutive regular-season series, and following a series sweep against the Pirates over the weekend, they started a three-game home series, winning the opener 5-4 against the Reds on Monday.
