Mets ace Clay Holmes hasn’t pitched since May 15, when he suffered a fibula fracture (right leg) during a game against his former recruiters, the New York Yankees. Holmes underwent surgery and has since been placed on a 60-day IL, with rumors of his trade gaining traction as the trade window nears.
However, Will Sammon of The Athletic has reported that the 33-year-old has shown genuine enthusiasm for a contract extension with the Mets this season. Reacting to this report, senior MLB analyst John Harper also backed Holmes’ statement to stay put in Queens.
“This should be a no-brainer for the Mets, given their need for pitching. Notable in the story, Holmes expresses loyalty to Mets for giving him the chance to start, and a desire to stay and be part of the solution. High-character guy. Highly regarded by teammates,” Harper wrote on X.
Holmes signed a three-year, $38 million contract with the Mets in December 2024, which included an opt-out clause after the 2026 campaign and a $12 million player option for the 2027 season. The two-time All-Star is heavily leaning toward exercising that option for next year to stay put in New York.
What Did Clay Holmes Say About His Future With the Mets?
Holmes discussed his position on a contract extension with The Athletic on Thursday amid ongoing trade rumors. He said he was fully open to extending his stay with the ballclub and that he already had a plan in place before arriving in Queens, feeling the business was still unfinished.
“Definitely open. I know things are not the easiest right now and hard, but it’s not like I’m sitting here hoping to run away from it. If I can be part of the solution to make things better here, I would like that. I came here for a reason,” Holmes said.
“You almost have the sense of some type of unfinished business. You want to make things right and do things well here because when you do win here, it’s very exciting. I’ve seen that. It’s something that I hope to be a part of. I don’t know what that looks like. But that desire is still there,” he added.
As Holmes makes progress in his rehab, many remain optimistic about his successful return to the mound this year. Multiple teams are considering whether the former Yankee can be a good fit for their bullpen ahead of the August 3 trade deadline. For now, Mets fans will hope the organization makes the right call on this one.
