Baseball fans criticized the Ole Miss Rebels for withdrawing the scholarship they had offered to high school catcher Brett Harris.
Harris was diagnosed with a brain tumor during his freshman year of high school. Since undergoing radiation treatment in 2023, he has been virtually sidelined from playing football for two years, but during that time, he has continued to focus on baseball.
USA Today reported that on June 28, just days after a visit from Rebels coaches, Ole Miss baseball coach Mike Bianco notified Harris that his scholarship had been revoked.
“It wasn’t about his ability, because he’s played really well. It was more the concern if he had to go up to Mayo Clinic and leave Ole Miss … We want to take the high road, but we also want to say our disappointment in letting a kid know a month before a school year is going to start,” Brett’s father Scott told USA Today.
Fans were quick to share their reactions to the news, with many accusing the Ole Miss baseball program of lacking in values.
“Did they think this would make them look better? Absolutely unacceptable from Ole Miss here,” yet another fan commented.

“He was diagnosed at 15, and they pulled it months before his first year. If they couldn’t afford the risk, they should have done this way earlier,” yet another fan commented.

“I feel like if they felt the brain tumor was enough of an issue, they could have rescinded that scholarship years before. Still would have been scummy, but it wouldn’t be cartoonishly high levels of scummy,” another fan commented.

Harris’s brother Calvin was a member of their 2022 national championship-winning roster. Brett committed to the Rebels in April 2023, during his brother’s final season with the team.
Brett Harris Produced Decent Numbers as a High School Senior
Harris is a conventional backstop who loves hitting. His entire high school career in Iowa has been centered on his performances both behind and in front of the plate. In his senior year, Harris posted a solid stat line, batting .414, with 15 doubles and 31 RBIs.
Despite the upsetting news from the Rebels baseball program, the University of Iowa has offered him a scholarship to join the Hawkeyes baseball team for the upcoming college season.
This opportunity would keep Harris near his hometown in Iowa and provide him with a valuable platform to showcase his talents as a rising baseball star.
