The New York Yankees suffered a huge body blow after their intra-city rivals, the New York Mets, defeated them in the inaugural Subway Series of the campaign with a thrilling walk-off hit at Citi Field on Sunday. With the win, the Mets won the three-game series 2-1, bouncing back effectively after they had lost the series opener on Friday.
Down 6-3 till the end of the eighth inning, the home team made a miraculous recovery in the bottom of the ninth inning, with Tyrone Taylor crushing a game-tying three-run homer off All-Star closer David Bednar, and then rookie Carson Benge hit a game-ending bouncer, which allowed Marcus Semien to score in the tenth, ultimately sealing the win, 7-6.
The Yankee nation was evidently unhappy with the team’s performance in the series finale and voiced their ire on social media.
“The Mets were 0 for their last 91 games when trailing in the 9th or later. Until today. That is the perfect summation of the Brian Cashman and Aaron Boone-led @Yankees. One embarrassment after another,” one fan commented.
“Piece of s— bullpen gives up 5 runs in 3 innings; we had a 5-1 lead in the 6th,” another fan commented.
“Nobody should be surprised. We have 1 win vs a team over .500. This team isn’t good and has benefited from playing garbage teams. We are just seeing the real Yankees now. Also, Boone should have been fired 4 years ago,” yet another fan commented.
Some other fans exclaimed that the Bronx Bombers were not making a deep run this season and further lashed out at the management and the coaching staff for their casual approach after a good early start to the year.
“Yankees bull pen and hitting when needed sucks Another year with Boone and other year of unfulfilled expectations Pathetic,” one fan commented.
“Yankee fans this is a reality check. I don’t care how this team started. The Yanks will not make the playoffs. The Yankees’ offense will lead @mlb in strikeouts. The bullpen will have the highest ERA in the league. Brian Cashman needs to go,” another fan commented.
“Every year its the bombers, bombers, bombers, I am tired of hearing the Yanks have this many homeruns Every year. Today 6 hits?? How about a player that hits 275, 15hr and 85RBI. Give me 6 of those. You have like four players under the Mendoza Line. How about just making contact?” yet another fan commented.
The Yankees Will Now Commence a Seven-Game Homestand in the Bronx
The Yanks will now head to Yankee Stadium to commence an important seven-game homestand involving two intra-divisional rivals. The ballclub first welcomes the Toronto Blue Jays for a four-game series starting Monday and then host the AL East leaders Tampa Bay Rays for a three-game series starting Friday.
After a disappointing Subway series loss, the Bombers are now 28-19 for the season, acquiring the second spot in the AL East division, three games behind the leaders, the Rays. They will aim to make up for the loss against the Mets by winning both series during the upcoming homestand.
